Last year I discovered the 2019 UPtv masterpiece A Christmas Movie Christmas (now streaming on Hulu). Two sisters become trapped inside a Christmas movie, and it makes fun of the Christmas movie tropes we all know and love. It was cheeky and fresh and stood out from the pack.
So when I saw Lights, Camera, Christmas on Hallmark’s 2022 lineup, debuting on Nov 5, I knew I had to kick off the holidays with another movie-inside-a-movie treat. It was a fun warm-up to the season heavier on winks than passion. Decider’s review says, “The script’s meta touch is just right, proving that the movie knows how to poke fun at the tropes while still engaging with most of them.”
The romantic leads had an interesting dynamic, but the relationship between Kerry and her mom stole the show. Maybe it’s because I watched the movie with my own mother, but I was touched by how caring and supportive Kerry’s mom was. I loved that this movie passed the Bechdel Test with flying colors, due to the many career conversations between mother and daughter.
Decider’s review gave me a heads-up about an upcoming HBOMax release, A Hollywood Christmas, about a director who gets stuck in—you guessed it, another Christmas movie. I will be watching on Dec. 1!
